DENIED DUE TO NOT MEETING CRITERIA, QUALIFICATIONS........

While many DV victims are complaining that our Coalitions, agencies and shelters have denied them assistance due to not meeting criteria and qualifications of funding or that they exceeded the guidelines/limits here is another experience of "denial of Social Services". Victimization of this young man has occurred as well but his reaction/response is more "appropriate".

I am posting this young man's experience that I have just found out about trying to make a point and I sure hope that it hits home with some out here in cyberspace.

A young man, age 24; full-time college student and works approximately 38 hours a week earning $9.00/hour ($342.00 before taxes are withheld) while carrying 15-18 credits per semester to obtain his degree and maintains a 3.3 GPA.

Due to his age as of April, 2009 he has aged out of his health insurance coverage on his father's policy. He is asthmatic, has allergies and has ADD. He needs medications for all. The insurance company offered him an additional 18 months of medical coverage on COBRA (he would have had to pay for the coverage) at $423.00 per month; he applied for Blue Advantage and was rated due to his medical conditions and was rated at $525.00 per month! (*How can a full-time student making $9/hour afford these rates?)

He has been without health insurance and his prescription medications since May 1, 2009. He prays daily that he can keep his asthma under control; buys Zyrtec over the counter as he can afford to do to help control his allergies and struggles with studies because he cannot afford the prescription for his ADD. He remains optimistic; however, his spirit is diminishing. He has experienced respiratory distress in the past due to his asthma - thank God he had health insurance that paid for the costs of the doctors and hospital. He prays every day that he can just get through the rest of his education to obtain his degree, land a job and receive corporate benefits (hoping that employers will still be offering health benefits). Oh, wait.......health insurance providers have a little clause, "pre-exisiting conditions" = they won't pay for services or needs for a specified amount of time. Once again, he will be screwed for the length of time stipulated.

He has rent, electric, water/sewer, food, an auto loan, auto insurance, etc. to pay on his own. He barely gets by.

This young man had to muster up the courage and pay a visit to his local Social Service office in his county for assistance of any kind, especially seeking medical assistance. After many hours of waiting, filling out paperwork and a meeting; he was DENIED ANY MEDICAL ASSISTANCE (Medicaid) because he didn't meet the following criteria:

  • He doesn't have children - (if he had children he would meet the criteria)

  • He isn't 65 (if he was 65 or older he would meet the criteria)

  • He isn't blind or disabled (if he was blind or disabled he would meet the criteria)

What I have just described above to you is not just one experience and it won't be the last. There are many people suffering, just hanging on today. He is damned if does and damed if he doesn't. But yet we encourage young people to be the best that they can be. We drive home that the sky is the limit for them. This young man is shooting for the stars and is determined not to allow anyone or anything stand in his way of being the best that he can be.

Now I, perplexed by "this system and their guidelines/criteria", ask why? How many people in this country are "FALLING THROUGH THE CRACKS" of our Social Service agencies? In essence, hasn't he been victimized? And, how many are "playing the system", getting what they seek and continue to use "the system"? All of our services are for temporary assistance, they were never met to be long term.

If he had children, he wouldn't be able to further his education because he would be responsible to support his children in or out of a marriage but he COULD GET MEDICAL ASSISTANCE! Isn't this a mixed signal that we are sending to our people, especially our young people who are trying to better themselves?

But you know what...............HE ISN'T WHINING, HE ISN'T CRYING, HE ISN'T CALLING WASHINGTON, DC, HE ISN'T BLAMING EVERYONE AND ALL AROUND HIM BECAUSE "A SYSTEM FAILED HIM"; HE ISN'T GIVING UP AND HE IS NOT GOING TO QUIT COLLEGE. He is respecting the guidelines that are in place and will continue on his journey. He will chalk this up to experience, perhaps advocate sometime in his life but he respects the guidelines set forth. This sends a loud message (he is only 24!).

He will pull up his bootstraps, walk with his head held high, keep praying, stay focused and positive. He will make it through because he is determined and a fighter, he is a Survivor. He will find a way - if there's a will............there is a way.

Keep in mind his life is threatened on a daily basis with a MEDICAL CONDITION, ASTHMA. He suffers daily with his allergies and struggles daily with his studies. His life may not be threatened at the hands of another person but he is threatened AND THERE'S NO ONE TO ASSIST HIM. There isn't anyone that will pay his doctor bills, prescriptions, dental visits nor help him pay his auto loan and insurance. He doesn't expect someone or the system to "take care of him" and his responsibilities to make his life a bit smoother.

He was "only" seeking assistance for health/medical services, which could be a matter of life or death - CONSTANTLY, EVERY DAY.

A Woman's Self-Worth......FIGHT FOR IT, DAMN IT!

Self-Worth; this is a word that is so much easier to say and spell then it is to feel!

Why do so many women feel that they have no self-worth? How did they lose it? Is it because of the way the world has portrayed the perfect woman today? Is it because someone took it from them? Is that the void some fill by over eating? Did their partner breach a trust? Does their partner demean them with insults about how they look? Did their partner admire other women? Did they grow up being ridiculed by a family member? Have they been suffering from a controlling illness? Were they bullied and criticized through their school years? Were they sexually abused as a child? Were they laughed at in a moment of vulnerability? Were they ever raped or abused?

All of these experiences play a part of pouring a woman's self-worth right down the toilet. The people causing these kind of negative actions are totally responsible for destroying and tearing down a woman's worth. To destroy or tear down a woman's self-worth
is one of the cruelest ways to treat a human being. It is a no win situation for that woman. They cannot fight back. They are being attacked blindfolded. Humiliation has succeeded - the battle is won. Anyone can win against innocence. When the battle turns around is when the true win begins. A true win is when the person who has lost her self-worth stands up and takes the control back.

For those that have been through a battle and are struggling or may have struggled to just get up on an elbow, feel empty inside and so alone that you wonder why you even get up in the morning.................YOU CAN AND WILL BEAT THIS!

You are not responsible for falling or losing the battle. But YOU ARE TOTALLY responsible for getting back up. It is you that has to pull it together. You need to go back as far as you can in your mind that puts a smile on your face. If you can't then think of someone that you know that is hurtin
g more deeply than yourself and use that as your motivation. Go there in your mind. Use these thoughts to give you reason to get up, dust yourself off and pull yourself together.
YOUR SELF-WORTH IS WORTH FIGHTING FOR.
You are as strong as your greatest strength. You will always be stronger than your greatest weaknesses. Those weaknesses will never win again your strengths..........never!

Yes, you have been hurt, disappointed, and raped of one of your most sacred emotions, SELF-WORTH. NOW YOU WANT IT BACK, SO TAKE IT BACK DAMN IT! It is right inside of you. You just have to bury it under all of your dirty laundry. You can continue to feel empty, use drugs, alcohol or even food to fill that void inside of you. You can miss out on life because you are forgetting to fight and it is so much easier to have a pity party. You can worry about if you try to gain back your self-worth that you will fail and feel even more lonely. You may fail the first try, second or third. You feel that it's all hopeless. If you give into that feeling, then you are truly letting yourself down as well others that love and care for you. YOU have now become responsible for losing your chance at regaining your self-worth. You are allowing whatever it was that tore you apart in the first place to take control of all of you and your soul. You are allowing a memory to defeat you. There is no person there, just a thought. A memory that you are allowing to ruin what little time you have on this earth. Why are you doing this? You know that you can stop it. You know how! Pick yourself up, dust yourself off; you must move onto HABITS - positive habits of thinking. You must reconstruct your thought patterns to think WIN, not to LOSE. IMMEDIATELY REMOVE THE WORDS, "GIVE UP" FROM YOUR VOCABULARY and replace them with "NEVER GIVE UP!". You must make a new commitment to yourself, the only one that you can reach out and touch!

The strength of negative thinking is overwhelming and controlling in itself. I have felt it's power many, many times. Honestly, to the point that I could hardly feel myself breath. That was when I knew that I, and only I could stop it and take back the control of my destiny. You must look inside of yourself and dig for the real you. Don't dig for the you that has been scarred, wounded or hurt but the you that can smile and laugh and
appreciate all of the good things in life. If you will just open your positive side and allow the great things to reach you the feeling will be truly uplifting. The more positive thoughts that you fill yourself with, the less negative thoughts can't survive. You must also be honest with your bad habits, what they are and where they are taking you. Identify them and how they are bringing you down, instead of up. The bad habits that you have allowed to run your life. Now, as you have invited them in, you will un-invite them. And, say no to abusing drugs, alcohol and yes FOOD!

To strengthen the mental you, you must strengthen the physical you. I am not referring to becoming a body builder or a full bore athlete. I simply mean a healthier you, A YOU THAT YOU WANT TO BE!

Please remember, whatever it was that brought you down in yourself is in the past.
If you continue to allow
the pain to live inside of you, you will suffer.
The past is over and there is no suffering on your part that will erase it.
Get on with life.
Reach deep inside of yourself and bring back the who you are. Bring back the person you can smile in the mirror.
Bring back the person you talk to all of the time.
Bring back the person that you were meant to be.
Bring back you, and then..............YOU WILL HAVE YOUR SELF-WORTH BACK!

Putting "numbers" into REALITY of Abuse

Often when I am speaking and/or teaching, I am asked to put the "statistics/numbers" for Domestic Violence, Rape and Stalking into more of a "reality check way" so that individuals (and our minds) can really get the scope of the ABUSE AGAINST WOMEN which is an EPIDEMIC (noun and adjective) in our nation. Being able to visualize or make the numbers more tangible....it is imperative to assist with the understanding and scope of what we are facing.

Domestic violence will strike 1 in every 4 women in her lifetime.
The statistics/numbers indicate that an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical abuse by an intimate partner every year!
In researching this number, 1.3 million.........the ENTIRE population of San Antonio, Texas represents this devastating estimation.

Rape,
1 in 6 women in America
will be a victim of sexual assault (attempted or completed rape in their lifetime).
The statistics-numbers indicate that an estimated 17.7 million American women have been victims of attempted or completed rape.
Researching this number,
17.7 million........the ENTIRE COMBINED population representing this astounding number encompasses:
New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston

Stalking, 1 in 12 women will be stalked in their lifetime.
The statistics-numbers indicate that 1 million women have been stalked in annually in the United States.
Researching this number represents the ENTIRE city of Dallas

Perhaps to some this may be real harsh realizations and personally I feel that this is a good thing (a wake-up call). People, we truly have an epidemic on our hands and the numbers only represent cases that are being reported! Can you even imagine or fathom the numbers if all cases of the above types of abuse were infact reported? Can anyone say "WOW!"?

As a nation, society, communities and individuals it is imperative for all of us to roll our sleeves, get dirty and NEVER, NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP.

One may ask..........how to "we" begin, "where" to we begin?

We must join forces to educate all ages. Education is imperative in all aspects of life. It is never too late to learn nor too late to become involved. Advocate, be a voice in your community/state. Work within agencies/organizations that need you. Volunteer, yes make the time (short spurts during a week) to offer your help/assistance. Reach out to the agencies - they need you! They need your voice, they need your presence.

And, ultimately women/females need you! (if I could point my finger through this blog I would).

We cannot give up ever. The madness must stop. Females must know their rights, learn confidence in many respects and be educated, in all aspects. Males need the same, they need to be educated.

Domestic violence, rape and stalking.......THESE ARE NOT TABOO SUBJECTS any longer.

I personally commend and thank all groups of males who advocate against ending violence against women. Gentlemen.............we need you in our corner. We need role models.

People, let's get busy - we have our work cut out for us. If you personally touch one person's life - trust me, you have helped.
